School is in Session!
Ciao amici! As the week is coming to a close, I thought I'd share a little about my first week of classes! (because yes, even in a dream world, I need to go to school) I am blown away by the campus itself. FUA's buildings are scattered across the city, which I love. (definitely helps keep off the pasta pounds for sure) And after only being here for such a short time, I can honestly say that I'm slowly, but surely starting to find my way around the city...granted it does take some getting lost (a couple hundred times)...
Since I have no class on Monday, my first class is on Tuesday at 8:00am (early I know, but trust me it's worth getting it over with). First class is intermediate Italian, which for the most part is review of a lot that I learned at Stonehill. #easyA! Then, at 9:00, I have Renaissance Architecture across town. (yes, I do need to bust my butt to get there on time) This class is really just as cool as it sounds. Of course it's taught by this little Italian woman named Lucia, that casually wears blue polka dotted pants, yellow socks, and red rain boots for the first day of class. (typically Italian style) I love this class because, like most of my other courses, we meet at different locations throughout the city each week. Instead of just learning about the structure of buildings throughout Florence, we'll actually be experiencing them first hand!
Later on at 3:00, I have Dante Alighieri's Readings and Culture Walk course. For those of you that don't know, Dante is a very famous Florentine man from the Renaissance, that although exiled from the city for his political beliefs, wrote some of the most renowned works in Italian history. (see, I'm actually paying attention...I swear this is not common knowledge) This course is split between class learning and field learning. We spend about the first 30-45 minutes in the classroom talking about the readings, then go on these so called "culture walks" (you're guess is as good as mine, but really just another way to work off gelato for me)
Moving onto my Wednesday schedule, I start bright and early with Italian at 8:00. (this is when I started regretting my "early bird gets the worm" attitude when choosing classes) Following that, at 9:00, I have Art, Food, Fashion, and Wine; Creative Advertising of Italian Destinations. (which, by the way, is JUST as overwhelming as it sounds) This covers so many different platforms of advertising in Italy, so as a marketing major, I am thriving. The course also includes a trip to the Gucci Museum, a wine tasting, and visits to local shops, so I can't really be too upset.
At 3:00, I made my way to Love, Sex, and Marriage in Renaissance Italy. Now, I'm not one to sugar coat things, soooo this is basically a class about Renaissance porn (I kid you not) Don't get me wrong, it's incredibly interesting, however, I was in no way prepared to start our discussion on whether or not prostitution was an accepted profession. (Consensus was yes!) This is yet, another class that we take field trips to museums and palaces to learn about the families that were in control at the time (The Medici family ran this place back in the day)
Besides Italian Thursday morning as well, (which really sets me over the edge in terms of early rising) I don't have any other classes! Thursday, I decided to wander around the city to explore. I somehow found myself on the other side of the river, at the Piazza Michelangelo! (Don't ask me how I got there or how to get back there) So here's a picture from that!
And that's my entire schedule! My classes are pretty much
just extra curricular activities...basically no homework and all hands on learning. If only Stonehill could be more like this...one can dream!
btw, if you can't find me come August, it's probably because I flew back to Florence!
This is, no lie, the "classroom" that my advertising class is in!
